oRIGINS OF JUDAISM
Abraham
Abraham was born under the name Abram in the city of Ur in Babylonia. God made a promise with Abraham that if he leave his home and his family, God will give him a great nation, the promise land, Canaan now Israel and give him a descendant as many as the stars. Abraham is the first known Jew in history as he was chosen by God to lead his people. For Jewish people Abraham is the greatest prohpet to have lived. Christianity and Islam also believe in Abraham as Abraham is the father of Ishmael and Isaac.
Covenant of Patriarchs
The covenant of patriarchs of the Jews is Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The covenant is a sacred agreement between God and patriarchs but mostly Abraham as he is known the father of Jewish people. The covenant is made between patriarchs and their descendants that they will live a comfortable life. This means that they will live in the land of Cannan, the promise land chosen by God Himself.
Moses
Moses is one of the most important figures in Judaism. Moses led the slaves out of Egypt as the order of God which he faced the pharaoh and prove that he is a servant of God. Moses has become an important figure to Judaism as he led them to the promise land and is known for talking to God in Mt. Sinai, receiving the Ten Commandments from God.
Exodus Story
The Exodus Story is during the journey of Moses and Aaron to free the Israelites. This can also be known as the Ten Plagues that happened in Egypt where many Egyptians died. The Jewish people was able to survive the plagues with the commandment of God, painting their doors with blood. This is a reminder from God that He will look out for his people.
Ten Commandments
The Ten Commandments are the foundation of ethics and responsibilities of the Jewish people.
1. You shall have no other Gods before Me.
2. You shall not make idols.
3. You shall not take the name of the Lords your God in vain.
4. Keep the Sabbath day holy.
5. Honour you parents.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against you neighbour.
10. You shall not covet.
Passover
The Passover also known as Pesach in Judaism is a festival for the Jews to commemorate the day when God pass over the homes of the Israelites to protect them during the Ten Plagues. Usually celebrated with a bread called Matzo (unleavened bread).
