Signs and Symbols
Star of David- David refers to God as his shield, when he speaks “But You God are a shield for me” (Psalms 3:4) The Star of David is the most common symbol for expressing Jewish identity today. This star is located in the middle of the flag of Israel. It is also located on the Jewish synagogues to display that it is a Jewish place of worship. It can also be used as decoration in homes.
Menorah-One of the oldest symbols of the Jewish faith is the Menorah. A menorah is a seven-branched candle used in the Temple/Synagogues. The menorah has been said to be a symbol which resembles light being shun upon the nations (or perhaps one candle for each of the seven continents). Mezuzah- A Mezuzah is usually found on the doorposts of traditional Jewish homes. On the majority of the Mezuzahs, the Star of David is located at the top of the Mezuzahs, and the Menorah is found at the bottom, to remind Jewish people that God is everywhere. |
